When Grouper Season Opens Off Amelia Island
Grouper is not a year-round fish here, and any charter page that tells you otherwise is selling you a trip that cannot happen. Atlantic grouper closes every winter and reopens May 1. Season dates below are current for the 2026 season in Florida Atlantic state waters and South Atlantic federal waters; both are reset each year, so Captain Scott confirms what is open the week you call.
- Closed season, January 1 through April 30. Gag, black, red, and scamp grouper are all closed to harvest in Atlantic state and federal waters through the winter and early spring. Offshore trips still run in this window, targeting the other species that hold on the same structure.
- Gag grouper, open May 1 through August 1. The marquee grouper on The Ledge and the heaviest of the group. The 2026 federal South Atlantic gag season was set by NOAA at 93 days, closing in early August, and the Florida Atlantic state-waters season matches that window.
- Red grouper, open May 1 through December 31. The steadiest grouper on the calendar once the season opens. Reds hold on live-bottom and reef structure across the offshore band and keep the bottom box filling into the winter.
- Scamp grouper, open May 1 through December 31. The trophy of the bottom box and the best eating of the group. Scamp hold on the deeper Ledge structure and are the fish that defines a trip when one comes over the rail.
- Black grouper, open May 1 through December 31. Less common on this stretch of coast than gag or red, but a real possibility on the deeper drops on a longer trip.
Bag and size limits follow the same annual reset. As of the 2026 season, Atlantic anglers keep up to three grouper per person per day within a three-fish aggregate, with only one of those a gag or a black, at a 24-inch minimum for gag and black and a 20-inch minimum for red and scamp. Where We Target Grouper Off Amelia Island
A grouper trip is a working rotation through the most productive bottom structure within reach of the marina. Captain Scott picks the run based on the day’s wind and sea state, the season, and which grouper are open.
- The Ledge, 30 to 40 miles offshore. The drop-off, live-bottom, and reef structure in federal waters off Nassau County is the heart of every offshore grouper trip. This is where the longer trip earns its extra hours, and the hours are bottom time rather than run time.
- Nearshore wrecks and artificial reefs, 15 to 25 miles. The closer wrecks and reef structure inside The Ledge hold smaller gag grouper and the occasional red. This is bread-and-butter water and the pivot when the wind keeps the boat off a full Ledge run, which means a breezy forecast does not cancel your trip.
- Hard bottom between the wrecks. The limestone live-bottom holds the same species at lower density. Captain Scott runs these numbers to rest a wreck bite or to pick up a different size class.
- The deeper Ledge structure. When conditions allow, the run pushes out to the deeper drops where the bigger scamp and the heavy gags hold.

How the Fight Actually Works on the Bottom
Grouper fishing is a strength game with one moment of technique in it, and most guests have never fished it before. The rig goes down with enough lead to hold bottom in the current The Ledge carries, which is more current than most people expect this far up the Florida coast. The bite is not subtle. The fish loads the rod and immediately turns for cover.
What you do in that first second decides the fish. Lift fast and hard, and keep lifting, so the grouper comes up off the structure before it can rock you. Hesitate, give it slack, or try to finesse it, and the fish is in the rocks and gone with your rig. Other Species You Will Catch on a Grouper Trip
Grouper is the headline, but The Ledge and the wrecks rarely give up just one species in a day. On a typical offshore trip targeting grouper, guests also pick up:
- Amberjack. The reef donkey. It holds on the same Ledge wrecks and pulls harder per pound than anything else on the boat. Open most of the year in South Atlantic federal waters, with a spring closure set annually by NOAA.
- Triggerfish. A steady wreck and live-bottom bite and some of the best eating that comes over the rail, subject to the federal season.
- Mangrove snapper. Holds tight to the same structure as the grouper and keeps the action going between bottom fish.
- Black sea bass. Numbers fish on the inner wrecks and easy bites for a first-time offshore angler, subject to the federal season NOAA sets each year.

Who the Grouper Trip Is Built For
The grouper trip is the one Captain Scott recommends to three kinds of group, and the one repeat clients rebook year after year.
Anglers who want to bring fish home. Grouper is excellent table fare, the limit is real but generous enough to feed a group, and the dockside cleaning means you leave with bagged fillets rather than a cooler full of work.
Anglers who want the fight. A heavy grouper hits like a dropped anchor and heads straight down. Nothing inshore feels like it, and it is what brings repeat clients back to the offshore trip specifically.
Groups past their first charter. This is a real offshore day: an early start, a long run, and hours of heavy tackle. If your group has fished a nearshore trip before, or is comfortable on a boat for a full working day, grouper is the natural next step.
