A Thrilling King Mackerel Catch Off Amelia Island’s North Jetty

Fishing off Amelia Island, there’s no shortage of excitement — especially when you hook a big King Mackerel near the North Jetty. Captain Scott of Pipe Dream Charters and his crew recently had an unforgettable trip trolling the waters just off the Amelia Island jetty. After cast-netting pogies on the beach, we made our way toward the north side of the jetty, eager for what the day might bring.

Perfect Conditions for King Mackerel Trolling

The best tide for trolling around the jetties is the incoming tide, when the baitfish move closer to the rocks. However, we were a few minutes late, and the tide had already started to ebb. Despite that, we knew there was still a chance — a smoker King might be lurking near the bait pods.

We started slow trolling about a quarter mile short of the red buoy, with bait busting everywhere around us, creating the perfect setup for an exciting catch.

Patience Pays Off – A King Mackerel Strikes

After about 10 minutes of trolling, the strike came — and it was powerful! The reel screamed as the King Mackerel made a long, 100-yard run, smoking the line. Ronnie, the first mate, quickly adjusted the drag, handed the rod to Shane’s daughter, and the fight began.

After 25 minutes of intense back-and-forth, carefully working the fish, the first mate successfully gaffed the massive King Mackerel. This fish would have been a contender in any tournament!
